The first children’s class I ever watched go wrong was taught by a very good adult yoga teacher. She had a printed sequence, a lovely voice, and eleven six-year-olds. Four minutes in, two of them were under a mat pretending to be crocodiles and she was still explaining the alignment of tadasana. She wasn’t a bad teacher. She just had no idea that children need a completely different toolkit, and nobody had told her.
That is the whole reason kids yoga teacher training exists as a separate qualification. It is not adult yoga with cartoon names for the poses. It is child development, attention span management, safeguarding, nervous-system work, and a lot of controlled chaos.
This kids yoga teacher training guide covers what these courses actually teach, what it costs in 2026, how the Yoga Alliance RCYT credential really works (most websites get this wrong), what you can realistically earn, and how to spot a school that will take your money and give you a PDF. I’ve been teaching since 1979 and training teachers for decades, so some of this will be blunt.
Quick Answer: What Is Kids Yoga Teacher Training?
Kids yoga teacher training is a specialist certification that teaches adults how to safely teach yoga to children aged roughly 2 to 17, covering child development, age-appropriate asana, breathing games, class management, and safeguarding. Courses run from 20 to 95 hours.
For the Yoga Alliance RCYT credential you need a 200-hour RYT certificate, a 95-hour kids yoga teacher training with a Registered Children’s Yoga School (RCYS), and 30 hours of teaching children afterwards. Costs in 2026 range from USD 300 for short online courses to USD 3,000 for residential 95-hour programmes.
You do not legally need any certification to teach yoga to children in most countries. Schools, insurers, and studios will still ask for one.

What Is Kids Yoga Teacher Training, Exactly?
A kids yoga teacher training is a course that retools an adult yoga practice into something a child can actually receive. The postures barely change. Everything around them does.
A proper syllabus includes child development by age band, safe asana for growing joints, breathing and relaxation taught as play, storytelling and theme-based sequencing, group management for six to thirty children, trauma-sensitive and inclusive teaching, safeguarding and touch policy, and the business of getting into schools.
How Is Kids Yoga Teacher Training Different From Adult YTT?
Six things change in kids yoga teacher training, and they change everything:
- Attention span. A five-year-old gives you eight minutes. Plan in blocks, not flows.
- Anatomy. Growth plates are open. Many children are hypermobile. Flexibility is not the goal; stability is.
- Language. No Sanskrit lectures, no anatomical cues. Show, don’t explain.
- Consent and touch. Hands-on adjustment norms from adult yoga do not transfer. Most children’s settings are hands-off by default.
- Pranayama limits. Bee breath and balloon belly, yes. Kapalabhati and breath retention, no.
- Purpose. Adults come to yoga for relief. Children come because someone brought them. You have to earn the room every single time.
I’ve seen 500-hour teachers struggle in a kids room and primary school teachers with zero yoga background run a beautiful class. Classroom control is the harder half of the skill, and children’s yoga teacher training is where you build it.
What Are the Benefits of Kids Yoga Teacher Training?
The benefits are practical, not philosophical. Here is what actually changes for you and for the children in front of you.
1. You deliver something children measurably need. The research on school-based yoga is better than most people assume. A systematic review by Khunti and colleagues covering 21 school-based yoga studies found improvements in stress, anxiety, and low mood among children and adolescents. A separate review by Miller and colleagues examined 39 randomised controlled trials and reported gains in psychological, cognitive, and physical functioning in young people.
2. Your adult teaching gets sharper. Every teacher I’ve trained who then worked with children came back better with adults. You stop over-explaining. You start demonstrating. You read a room in three seconds instead of thirty.
3. It opens a market adult yoga can’t reach. Schools, preschools, after-school clubs, paediatric clinics, birthday parties, summer camps, special-needs settings, parent-child classes. Most yoga teachers fight over the same 7 a.m. studio slot. Very few can hold 28 children for forty minutes.
4. The money is often better per hour. School contracts run on term schedules instead of hoping eight people turn up on a wet Tuesday.
5. It counts as continuing education. If you already hold an RYT designation, most kids yoga teacher training hours count as Yoga Alliance CECs toward your three-year renewal.
6. It is genuinely enjoyable. Underrated point. Adult classes are quiet and serious. Children’s classes are loud and funny, and you leave with more energy than you arrived with.
What Does the Research Say About Yoga for Kids?
Researchers at Tulane University ran yoga and mindfulness sessions before school with third-graders who had been screened for anxiety symptoms. The intervention group’s psychosocial and emotional quality-of-life scores improved compared with peers receiving standard care from a school social worker.
Teachers involved in the study also reported using yoga more often in class after their own training component. The study appeared in Psychology Research and Behavior Management.
A separate pilot in rural Arkansas ran an eight-week programme with 71 third and fourth graders, 60 in the intervention group and 11 as comparison, measuring anxiety before and after.
None of this means yoga fixes childhood anxiety. It means the evidence base is real enough that schools will listen when you knock on the door. Use it in your pitch. Any good kids yoga teacher training will hand you these studies rather than leave you to find them.
How Do You Become a Certified Kids Yoga Teacher?
To register with Yoga Alliance as an RCYT you need three things: a 200-hour certificate from a Registered Yoga School, a 95-hour kids yoga teacher training from a Registered Children’s Yoga School, and 30 hours of teaching children’s yoga completed after that specialty course.
| Step | What you do | Time | Cost (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Practise consistently. Most schools want 6–12 months, or around 40 adult classes | 6–12 months | Varies |
| 2 | Complete a 200-hour yoga teacher training with an RYS | 3–8 weeks residential, or 6 months part-time | 500–5,000 |
| 3 | Complete a 95-hour kids yoga teacher training with an RCYS | 10–14 days intensive, or 3–5 months modular | 1,000–3,000 |
| 4 | Teach 30 hours of children’s yoga | 3–9 months | Paid or volunteer |
| 5 | Upgrade your Yoga Alliance registration to RCYT | 2–4 weeks | Annual fee |
Most people underestimate step 4. The kids yoga teacher training itself is the fast part.
What Is RCYT Certification?
RCYT stands for Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher. It is a Yoga Alliance designation, not a licence and not a diploma. It signals to studios and schools that you completed a recognised specialty course on top of a foundation qualification.
The part almost every course page glosses over: RCYT is an upgrade, not a starting point. A 95-hour children’s certificate on its own does not register you with anyone. Without an active 200-hour or 500-hour RYT, it is simply a certificate from that school. Useful in practice, often enough for a school contract, but not RCYT.
Do You Need a 200-Hour Certificate Before Kids Yoga Teacher Training?
No, not to take the course. Yes, if you want RCYT.
Many schools welcome parents, primary teachers, occupational therapists, and childcare staff into kids yoga teacher training with no prior qualification. Some Indian schools, though, require 200 RYT before you can enrol on their 95-hour programme, so check before you book a flight.
My own view, stated openly: build the foundation first, then specialise. Without the anatomy and philosophy base you’ll know that you should avoid deep backbends with a hypermobile nine-year-old, but not why, and “why” is what parents ask you.
What Is an RCYS and Why Does It Matter?
RCYS means Registered Children’s Yoga School. Only an RCYS can issue 95 hours that count toward RCYT, and all 95 hours must come from the same RCYS. You cannot combine 40 hours from one school with 55 from another. Your 200-hour and your 95-hour may be from different schools, but the 95 must be one.
Yoga Alliance also tightened its training requirements from 1 January 2024, including how much of a course can be pre-recorded.
Before COVID, 87 of the 95 hours had to be in the physical presence of your trainers. That rule loosened, then partly re-tightened. Check the current standard on the Yoga Alliance registry before you pay for any kids yoga teacher training, not on the school’s homepage.
Is 95-Hour Kids Yoga Teacher Training Worth It?
It is worth it if you want school contracts, insurance that covers minors, or the RCYT credential. It is not worth it if you just want to run yoga games at your child’s birthday party.
Be honest about which one you are. A 20-hour weekend course gives you a toolkit and costs USD 400 to 900. A 95-hour kids yoga teacher training gives you a credential and costs two to four times that.
What About YACEP and Continuing Education Credits?
If you already teach, most children’s yoga courses are offered by YACEP providers, meaning the hours count toward the continuing education Yoga Alliance requires every three years.
Shorter specialist modules, like a 25-hour trauma-sensitive kids yoga course, work well here. You get useful skills and clear your CEC requirement in one go, and the hours still count if you later commit to a full 95-hour kids yoga teacher training.
What Does a Kids Yoga Teacher Training Curriculum Cover?
Good programmes organise content around developmental stages, not around a pose list. This is the framework I use, drawn from the applied anatomy I teach in our residential courses.
| Age | Attention span | What works | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–4 | 3–5 min per activity | Animal sounds, imitation, songs, parent-child play | Alignment cues, holding poses, silence |
| 5–7 | 8–12 min | Story adventures, themes, breath games | Long instructions, competition, deep stretching |
| 8–11 | 15–20 min | Partner poses, balance challenges, simple anatomy | Forced flexibility, comparing children |
| 12–14 | 20–30 min | Real vinyasa, strength, stress tools, body autonomy | Public correction, jargon, over-familiarity |
| 15–17 | Adult range | Near-adult practice, philosophy, exam-stress protocols | Talking down, mandatory participation |
Beyond that, a complete kids yoga teacher training covers the anatomy of the growing body, nervous system regulation, adapted breath work, yoga nidra for children, safeguarding, special populations, lesson planning, and a teaching practicum.
What Do You Learn About Toddler Yoga (Ages 2 to 4)?
Very little of it looks like yoga. Toddler classes are parent-child, 20 to 25 minutes maximum, built on imitation and sound. Downward dog becomes a dog that barks.
Cobra hisses. There is no correction, no holding, and no expectation that anyone stays on their mat. Some Indian kids yoga teacher training programmes also cover baby massage and early samskaras in this band.
What Changes for Teen Yoga Teacher Training (Ages 13 to 17)?
Almost everything flips. Teenagers can handle a near-adult practice, but they will not tolerate being talked down to, and they will not participate under pressure. What works: choice, strength work, and honest framing around exam stress, sleep, and body image.
What fails: forced partner work, public correction, and spiritual language they didn’t ask for. Teen yoga teacher training is often sold as a separate module for this reason.
What Is Trauma-Sensitive Kids Yoga?
It is an approach built on choice and predictability rather than instruction. Invitational language instead of commands, no hands-on adjustment, exits always available, consistent class structure, and eyes-open rest as an option.
If you plan to work in schools, care settings, or anywhere with vulnerable children, this module matters more than your asana knowledge. Any kids yoga teacher training that skips it is not a serious programme.
How Much Does Kids Yoga Teacher Training Cost in 2026?
Budget USD 300 to 3,000 depending on hours and format.
| Format | Hours | 2026 price (USD) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short online course, self-paced | 12–30 | 300–700 | Parents, classroom teachers, testing the water |
| Online course with live mentoring | 30–95 | 700–2,000 | Working teachers who need flexibility |
| Weekend in-person intensive | 20 | 400–900 | Local CECs, hands-on practice |
| 95-hour RCYS programme | 95 | 1,000–3,000 | Anyone wanting RCYT |
| 200-hour foundation TTC | 200 | 500–5,000 | The prerequisite |
For the foundation course, 2026 pricing guides put online 200-hour programmes at roughly USD 2,500–4,500 and US studio programmes at USD 3,000–5,000. Residential courses in India, Bali, and Thailand run about USD 1,700–3,000 including food and accommodation, with Indian programmes advertised as low as USD 799.
Kids yoga teacher training costs people forget: Yoga Alliance annual registration, liability insurance covering minors, a police clearance or background check, props, and travel. Add USD 200 to 500 a year.
Online vs In-Person Kids Yoga Teacher Training: Which Should You Choose?
Online wins on cost and scheduling. In-person wins on the one skill that decides whether you can teach children at all: holding a live room.
| Online | In-person / residential | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | 300–2,000 | 900–3,000+ |
| Schedule | Self-paced | Fixed dates |
| Practice teaching | Usually video submission | Live, with feedback |
| Hands-on skills | Limited | Full |
| Peer community | Forums, variable | Immediate and lasting |
| Suits | Experienced teachers, self-starters | Newer practitioners, career changers |
I’ll say the unpopular thing. Online kids yoga teacher training teaches content perfectly well. What it cannot teach is what to do when one child cries, two start wrestling, and a third asks a question about death during rest time. That is learned in a room with actual children in it.
Can You Do Kids Yoga Teacher Training Online and Still Get RCYT?
Yes, if the school is a registered RCYS and the programme includes the required real-time hours. Most online 95-hour courses run live Zoom sessions plus recorded modules, and nearly all require a video of you teaching real children for assessment. Fully pre-recorded, zero-contact programmes will not meet RCYS standards, whatever the sales page implies.
How Long Does Kids Yoga Teacher Training Take?
- Weekend course, 20 hours: 2 to 3 days
- Online self-paced, 30 to 50 hours: 4 to 8 weeks
- 95-hour intensive: 10 to 14 days residential
- 95-hour modular online: typically 9 to 10 hours a week for 10 weeks, with up to 5 months allowed
- Full RCYT path from zero: realistically 12 to 24 months, because the 30 teaching hours accumulate slowly
The kids yoga teacher training itself is rarely the bottleneck. The teaching log is.
Why Do So Many People Do Kids Yoga Teacher Training in India?
Cost and immersion. A residential kids yoga teacher training in India is usually the cheapest serious option on the market. A residential course in India often costs less than a non-residential one in London or New York, and that price usually includes room, board, and 5 a.m. starts you would never keep at home.
There is a second reason people mention less often. In the Indian tradition children were brought into practice early, and a gurukul-style school treats teaching as transmission rather than curriculum delivery. Whether that appeals to you is personal. It changes the experience considerably.
Rishikesh vs Goa: What Is the Difference?
Rishikesh has volume. Dozens of schools, ghats, a strong Himalayan atmosphere, and enormous variation in quality. It is cold in winter and crowded in season.
Goa is quieter and coastal. Fewer schools, smaller cohorts, sea air, and a calmer pace. If you want anonymity and intensity, Rishikesh. If you want space and a small group, Goa. Our own school sits in Colva, South Goa, for exactly that reason.
How Much Do Kids Yoga Teachers Earn?
Group children’s classes typically pay USD 25 to 75 an hour. Private sessions and parties run USD 75 to 200. Experienced teachers running their own school programmes report anywhere from USD 25 to 250 per hour.
Indeed’s data, based on over 1,600 salary reports, puts the average US yoga teacher rate at about USD 31 per hour. Industry breakdowns for 2026 show studio group classes at USD 25–75, privates at USD 75–150 and up, and corporate sessions at USD 75–200.
How Do You Price Kids Yoga Classes?
Children’s yoga has a structural advantage over adult classes: you can charge per child rather than per session.
- Studio or school pays you a flat rate: USD 40–75 per class, no admin on your side
- You run it yourself, per child: USD 5–20 per student per class
- A real example: one experienced teacher charges USD 5 per child at her children’s school, caps registration at 20, and clears USD 100 per class with no room rent
- Common recommendation for a new kids yoga teacher: around USD 75 per hour for a weekly class where you just show up and teach, more if you’re doing registration and marketing yourself
Rates in India work differently. School contracts, residential society classes, and summer camps price locally, but demand has grown steadily since yoga entered school wellness programming.
The honest caveat: almost nobody lives on children’s classes alone. Teachers who do well stack school contracts, weekend workshops, holiday camps, private clients, and parent-child sessions. Your kids yoga teacher training should cover this; if the syllabus has no business module, ask why.
How Do You Find the Best Kids Yoga Teacher Training Near You?
Ask any kids yoga teacher training school these eight questions before you pay:
- Are you listed on the Yoga Alliance registry as an RCYS? (Check the registry yourself, not their website.)
- How many live contact hours are there? Give me the number.
- Who is the lead trainer, and how many children have they taught? Not teachers. Children.
- Is there a practicum with real children?
- Does the manual include lesson plans I can use in week one?
- How deeply is safeguarding covered?
- What support exists after graduation?
- What is the refund policy in writing?
Red flags: a certificate promised in an afternoon, no safeguarding module, trainers whose entire background is adult yoga, “Yoga Alliance approved” with no registry listing, and countdown-timer discounts.
What Does a Real Kids Yoga Class Plan Look Like?
Here is a 45-minute structure for ages 5 to 7 that survives contact with reality.
| Minutes | Segment | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 0–5 | Arrival circle | Names, one check-in question, one shared breath |
| 5–10 | Warm-up game | Movement with a rule, such as freeze-and-shape |
| 10–25 | Story adventure | 8 to 12 poses woven into a narrative |
| 25–33 | Challenge | Partner poses or a balance game |
| 33–38 | Breath game | Feather breath, bee breath, blowing out candles |
| 38–43 | Rest | Guided, story-led, 3 to 5 minutes maximum |
| 43–45 | Closing | One thing they liked, one namaste, done |
Roughly 60 percent movement, 20 percent play, 20 percent settling. Flip that ratio and you will spend the class refereeing instead of teaching.
What Kids Yoga Games Actually Work?
The ones with a rule and a stop:
- Freeze and shape. Music plays, children move, music stops, everyone becomes the pose you call.
- Yoga snakes and ladders. Land on a square, hold that pose for five breaths.
- Feather breath. Blow a feather across the mat using only a long exhale. Teaches extended exhalation without a single word about the nervous system.
- Pass the pose. One child invents a shape, the circle copies it, next child adds one.
- Sleeping lions. The only version of rest that works with a group of eight-year-olds.
Any decent kids yoga teacher training sends you home with 40 to 60 of these plus printable lesson plans.
How Do You Start Teaching Kids Yoga After Certification?
Certification is the start, not the finish. Order of operations that works after your kids yoga teacher training:
- Get insured first. Confirm the policy names minors explicitly. Many general yoga policies exclude them.
- Get a background check. Schools will not talk to you without one.
- Teach free for six weeks. A community centre, a friend’s classroom, a library. This is also how you bank RCYT teaching hours.
- Approach schools with an outcome, not a service. Heads of school do not want yoga. They want fewer playground incidents and calmer afternoons. Lead with the research.
- Run a paid holiday camp. Highest margin, easiest sell, and parents book weeks in advance.
- Then raise your rate. Most new teachers undercharge for two years and resent it in year three.
What Mistakes Do New Kids Yoga Teachers Make?
Across years of kids yoga teacher training graduates, the same five come up every time:
- Talking too much. Past 20 seconds of explanation you have lost half of them.
- Correcting alignment out loud. Children hear “you are wrong, publicly.” Demonstrate again instead.
- Under-planning. Bring three more activities than you need and be ready to bin the plan entirely.
- Saving rest for the end. Scatter small moments of stillness throughout instead.
- Copying adult sequencing. No 90-second holds. No detailed pranayama. No ten minutes of silence.
Where Does Inteyoga Fit Into This?
I would rather you trust the information than feel sold to, so here is the plain version.
Inteyoga does not currently run a 95-hour kids yoga teacher training. What we run is the 200 and 300-hour foundation that the entire RCYT path stands on, residentially, in a gurukul setting in Colva, South Goa.
- Advanced TTC 300-Hour Integrated Restorative Yoga, including Yoga Nidra, Chakra Sadhana, and Prana Vidya intensive. Admissions are open. Arrival dates: 13 December 2026, 5 February 2027, 24 May 2027, 16 July 2027, 7 September 2027, 1 November 2027. Duration 43 days plus 2. Taught in English.
- TTC Integrated Restorative Yoga (RYT 200 hrs) opens by mid-2027.
On fees we do something unusual. No payment is required to apply for or participate in the 300-hour course. At the end, if the training has meant something to you, we invite you to support our Gift-it-Forward initiative. Seats are limited and we ask only sincere sadhakas to apply. Included: full residency, vegetarian no-milk meals with herbal tea and fruit, and a quiet campus away from traffic and noise. Anyone over 12 can follow the teaching, which is why I have had teenagers and grandparents on adjacent mats in the same week.
I teach the applied anatomy, therapeutic yoga, and philosophy myself. My background is MBBS with a fellowship in diabetes mellitus from the Royal Liverpool Academy, an M.Sc. in Yoga, Yoga Master Level 6 from the Yoga Certification Board under the Ministry of AYUSH, and a diploma in acupuncture.
I was initiated into Mantra Yoga at the Divine Life Society, Rishikesh, on Chaitra Ram Navami in 1979 as a disciple of Swami Krishnananda, taught at the International Sivananda Ashram, and lectured in Applied Yogic Sciences at Bapu Nature Cure Hospital and Yogashram.
Why that matters for children’s work: the therapeutic lens is the one you need when a parent asks whether their child’s asthma, scoliosis, or anxiety is safe to work with. That question comes up in every kids yoga class eventually, and most specialty trainings do not prepare you for it.
Both courses are eligible for Yoga Alliance (US) registration as RYTs, which is precisely the prerequisite the RCYT route requires.

The Short Version
Kids yoga teacher training is a specialty, not a shortcut. Ninety-five hours with an RCYS is the recognised standard, it sits on top of a 200-hour foundation, and it converts to RCYT only after 30 hours of real teaching.
Budget USD 300 to 3,000 for your kids yoga teacher training, pick a school with live hours and a genuine practicum, get insured before your first class, and expect to be humbled by a six-year-old in week one.
The children part you learn by doing, badly at first. The yoga part you only really learn once, at the start, and it sticks.
If you are building that foundation, our residential courses in Goa are open now. Write to me at info@inteyoga.org.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I teach kids yoga without certification?
In most countries, yes. Yoga Alliance is a voluntary registry, not a licensing body, and there is generally no government regulation of yoga teachers. In practice schools, insurers, and studios ask for a certificate and a background check. Check your local rules, since a few places have begun regulating.
Is kids yoga teacher training worth it for a school teacher?
Yes, and you are often the ideal candidate. You already have classroom control, which is the hardest part to learn. What you gain is the yoga content, the safety knowledge, and a credential that lets you run paid sessions instead of folding it into your job for free.
What is the difference between kids yoga teacher training and children’s yoga teacher training?
Nothing. The terms are interchangeable. Yoga Alliance uses “children’s yoga” in its official designations, RCYS and RCYT, while most schools market “kids yoga teacher training” because that is what people search for.
Does a 95-hour children’s certificate register me with Yoga Alliance?
Not by itself. You need an active 200-hour or 500-hour RYT first, then the 95 hours with an RCYS, then 30 hours of teaching children. Then you upgrade your existing registration to RCYT.
How many hours of kids yoga teacher training do I need to start teaching?
Twenty hours is enough for informal settings if you are honest about your level. For school contracts and insurance, aim for 95. For RCYT, 95 is the requirement, full stop.
At what age can children start yoga?
Two to three with a parent present, in short playful sessions. Structured group classes work from about four. Alignment-focused practice is better left until 12 or older, once growth plates and coordination mature. Our own shala accepts students from age 12.
Do I need insurance to teach yoga to children?
Yes. Get professional liability cover before your first class and confirm in writing that it includes minors. Many standard yoga policies do not.
Is kids yoga teacher training in India recognized internationally?
If the school is registered with Yoga Alliance US, yes. India also has the Yoga Certification Board under the Ministry of AYUSH, which is increasingly recognised across Asia and the Middle East. Verify the listing before booking.
Can I do kids yoga teacher training for free?
Not a recognised one. Free introductory workshops and sample modules exist and are worth taking to test your interest, but a certificate that counts requires paid contact hours and assessment.
How do I get my 30 RCYT teaching hours?
Volunteer at a school, library, or community centre, run a free after-school club for a term, or offer parent-child sessions at a local studio. Log every session with date, duration, age group, and number of children from day one.
What props do I need to start?
Less than you think. Mats, a soft ball, a set of feathers, a bell or chime, printed pose cards, and one story book. Bolsters and blocks matter far less with children than with adults.
Should I do kids yoga teacher training or a general 200-hour first?
If you already practise seriously and want to teach children specifically, either order works. If you are newer to yoga, do the 200-hour first. It is the qualification everything else attaches to, and doing it residentially changes your own practice in a way a weekend never will.
