You wake up tired. Money worries arrive before breakfast. Your lower back aches, your sleep is light, and the ground under your life feels like it keeps moving. In yogic teaching, that pattern points to one place: the root chakra.
The root chakra is the first energy centre in the classical map of the subtle body. It deals with the questions that come before everything else. Am I safe. Am I supported. Do I belong here. When this base is steady, the rest of life feels more manageable. When it is not, nothing built on top of it holds for long.
This guide covers what the root chakra is, how a blockage actually shows up, which organs and emotions are linked to it, what research does and does not support, and a routine you can start this week.
Quick Answer
The root chakra, or Muladhara, is the first of the seven main chakras. It sits at the base of the spine near the perineum and is linked to the earth element, the colour red, and the seed sound LAM. It governs safety, survival and grounding. When blocked, it shows up as fear, anxiety, fatigue and lower-body complaints.

What Is The Root Chakra?
The root chakra is the first of seven energy centres described in tantric and hatha yoga texts, and the base that the other six rest on.
What Does Muladhara Mean In Sanskrit?
The name comes from two words. Mula means root. Adhara means base or support. Together they read as “root support”, which is a job description rather than a poetic label.
Traditional texts show it as a red four-petalled lotus with a yellow square at its centre, each petal carrying one of the Sanskrit syllables vaṁ, śaṁ, ṣaṁ and saṁ. The yellow square stands for prithvi tattva, the earth element, and the seed mantra LAM sits inside it.
Where Is The Root Chakra Located?
Muladhara sits at the base of the spine. Classical sources place it near the coccygeal plexus beneath the sacrum, with its surface activation point, or kshetram, between the perineum and the coccyx.
This is also where the three main nadis, Ida, Pingala and Sushumna, are said to emerge, which is why serious energy work starts here rather than higher up.
What Are The Root Chakra Properties?
| Property | Muladhara |
|---|---|
| Position | First chakra, base of spine |
| Sanskrit name | Muladhara (मूलाधार) |
| Meaning | Root support |
| Element | Prithvi (earth) |
| Colour | Red |
| Symbol | Four-petalled lotus, yellow square |
| Seed mantra | LAM (लं) |
| Sense | Smell |
| Body areas | Legs, feet, bones, pelvic floor, large intestine |
| Linked gland | Adrenal glands |
| Core theme | Safety, survival, belonging |
| Core fear | Not having enough, not being safe |
What Does The Root Chakra Do?
Muladhara handles survival. It governs physical safety, financial security, belonging, and how connected you feel to your own body. Anything that answers “am I okay right now” runs through this centre.
It does three things. It grounds attention in the body instead of leaving you stuck in your head. It supports steady energy, sleep and routine. And in kundalini theory, it holds dormant potential energy before that energy rises through Sushumna.
The building comparison gets used a lot, and it holds up. A cracked foundation shows as problems on every floor above it. That is why most students who arrive asking for advanced practices get sent back to grounding work first.
What Are Signs Of A Blocked Root Chakra?
A blocked root chakra usually shows as background fear, tiredness, money anxiety, and physical complaints in the lower body. One symptom on its own means little. The pattern is what matters.
Emotional Signs Of A Muladhara Imbalance
Anxiety with no clear trigger. Money fear even when the accounts are fine. Feeling unsafe at home or on edge in public. Trouble trusting people. A sense of not belonging anywhere. Restlessness that never quite settles.
Physical Root Chakra Symptoms
Commonly reported complaints include lower back, hip, leg and foot pain, along with fatigue and digestive problems such as constipation and bloating. Others report nightmares, weight gain in the lower half of the body, and general unease inside their own skin.
Behavioural Signs
Hoarding money or things “just in case”. Overeating, usually heavy comfort food. Avoiding change even when the present situation is bad. Constant busyness with no real rest. Skipping meals and sleep, running on caffeine.
What Is The Difference Between A Blocked And An Overactive Root Chakra?
Most articles only cover blockage. An overactive Muladhara looks different, and treating it like a blockage makes it worse.
| Underactive (blocked) | Overactive | |
|---|---|---|
| Emotional tone | Fear, spaciness, detachment | Rigidity, aggression, control |
| Money behaviour | Avoidance, disorganisation | Hoarding, obsession |
| Body | Low energy, underweight, cold | Heaviness, tension, over-eating |
| Change | Paralysed by it | Refuses it outright |
| What helps | Warming, activating, routine | Softening, release |
What Emotion Blocks The Root Chakra?
Fear blocks the root chakra. Most other symptoms follow from it.
This is not the sharp fear of a specific event. It is the slow, humming kind: fear of not having enough, of losing what you have, of the unknown, of failure. Fear disrupts the energy flow through the chakra, which generally leads to insecurity and anxiety.
Shame and distrust sit close behind. If someone’s early environment taught them the world is unreliable, Muladhara learns to stay half closed as protection.
You cannot think your way out of fear that lives at this level. It sits in the body, so the work has to be physical. Breath, movement, food, sleep, routine.
What Trauma Is Stored In The Root Chakra?
The root chakra is associated with survival-level trauma, the kind that threatened safety, shelter, belonging or the body.
In this model that includes early childhood neglect, unstable caregiving, physical or sexual abuse, poverty and hunger, housing insecurity, serious accidents or surgery, displacement and migration, sudden loss of a parent, and long-term bullying.
Experiences such as abuse, neglect or major life change are said to disrupt the energetic body, causing the root chakra to close off as a protective mechanism.
A note from our teachers, because this gets overstated online. Trauma is not stored in a chakra the way a file sits on a drive. Chakras are a map, not an anatomy diagram.
What the map describes accurately is that survival stress lives in the nervous system and the body, and body-based practice reaches it in a way that talking sometimes does not. If you are working with serious trauma, yoga belongs beside qualified therapy, not in place of it.
Which Organ Is Connected To The Root Chakra?
The adrenal glands are the endocrine glands most often linked to Muladhara. They sit on top of the kidneys and release adrenaline and cortisol, the hormones behind the fight-or-flight response.
The pairing makes sense inside the model. The root chakra is the survival centre and the adrenals are the survival glands.
| Area | Linked structures |
|---|---|
| Endocrine | Adrenal glands |
| Digestive | Colon and large intestine, bladder, elimination |
| Structural | Skeleton, legs, feet, teeth |
| Pelvic | Perineum, pelvic floor, rectum |
| Sensory | Nose, the sense of smell |
The adrenals are small, but they produce hormones that help regulate metabolism, immunity and blood pressure, which is why they affect how a person handles stress.
Which Chakra Blockage Causes Anxiety?
A root chakra blockage is the one most often linked to anxiety, because Muladhara governs the survival response. When this centre is unsettled, the body keeps a low-level alarm running even when nothing is wrong.
Root-based anxiety has a signature. It attaches itself to survival topics: money, rent, job security, health, housing, and whether people will stay.
Other centres carry their own versions. Solar plexus imbalance links to self-doubt and performance worry. Throat imbalance links to social fear. Existential, background dread belongs to the root.
What Does The Research Actually Show?
Most root chakra articles skip this part.
There is no scientific evidence that chakras exist as measurable physical structures. They belong to a yogic and tantric framework that predates modern anatomy by centuries. Anyone claiming chakras have been proven is overselling.
What holds up is the practice, not the mechanism. The techniques used to balance Muladhara have been studied properly.
A randomised clinical trial published in JAMA Psychiatry in August 2020 by Simon and colleagues compared yoga, cognitive behavioural therapy and stress education for generalised anxiety disorder.
Response rates were 54.2% in the Kundalini yoga group against 33% in the stress education group, and 70.8% in the CBT group. The authors’ conclusion was measured: yoga worked for generalised anxiety disorder, but CBT should remain first-line treatment.
A 2015 pilot randomised controlled trial by Jindani, Turner and Khalsa tested an 8-session Kundalini Yoga intervention against a waitlist control in 80 people with current PTSD symptoms.
So the fair statement is this. The chakra system is a traditional map for locating and working with human experience. The practices it prescribes have real, measured effects on anxiety and stress. Treat it as a map, not as a diagnosis.

How Can I Unblock My Root Chakra?
You unblock Muladhara by giving the body repeated physical proof that it is safe, through grounding, standing postures, mantra, breath, steady food and a steady routine. None of it is dramatic. It is the part that works.
Seven methods, in the order we usually teach them.
How Does Grounding Through The Feet Help?
Walk barefoot on grass, soil or sand for 15 to 20 minutes a day. In yogic terms you are reconnecting with prithvi tattva. In plain terms you are giving the nervous system direct contact with something solid that does not move. A park works if you live in a city. Doing it daily matters more than where you do it.
Which Yoga Poses Balance The Root Chakra?
Root chakra work needs postures that load the legs and pelvis.
| Pose | Sanskrit | Hold | What it builds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mountain Pose | Tadasana | 1 to 2 min | Postural grounding |
| Tree Pose | Vrikshasana | 30 to 60 sec each side | Single-leg stability |
| Garland Pose | Malasana | 1 to 3 min | Pelvic floor release |
| Chair Pose | Utkatasana | 30 to 45 sec | Leg strength, heat |
| Warrior II | Virabhadrasana II | 45 to 60 sec each side | Base and resolve |
| Bridge Pose | Setu Bandhasana | 45 to 60 sec | Lower back support |
| Corpse Pose | Shavasana | 5 to 10 min | Integration |
Go slowly. Flexibility is not the point. The point is feeling weight travel down into the floor.
How Do I Chant The LAM Mantra?
Sit upright. Bring attention to the base of the spine. Chant LAM aloud on a long exhale, 21 to 108 times, and aim to feel the vibration low in the pelvis rather than in the throat. LAM is the seed syllable assigned to Muladhara in the classical texts.
Why Does Yoga Nidra Help A Blocked Root Chakra?
Yoga Nidra is guided conscious relaxation done lying down. It suits root chakra imbalance because it asks nothing of the body while moving awareness systematically through it.
At Inteyoga, Yoga Nidra is taught within the Antarang Yoga module alongside Chakra Sadhana and Prana Vidya. Twenty minutes, three times a week, is a reasonable start.
Should I Practise Moola Bandha On My Own?
Moola Bandha and Ashwini Mudra are the classical pelvic-floor practices aimed directly at Muladhara. They work. They are also the two most commonly done wrong from a video, which is why we teach them only under direct observation, and only after a student’s asana and pranayama base is stable.
Which Daily Habits Support Muladhara?
This is where most of the healing actually happens. Sleep and wake at the same time. Eat three real cooked meals. Open your bank account and look at the numbers honestly. Clear out one drawer, then one shelf. Get outside for half an hour.
Research has also linked cluttered living spaces to raised cortisol through the day, which lines up with the traditional advice about ordered surroundings.
Do Root Chakra Affirmations Work?
They work when the body is involved. Say them out loud, present tense, standing with both feet planted: I am safe. I have enough. I belong here. My body is my home. Said while scrolling, they do nothing.
The Inteyoga 7-Day Grounding Reset
A structured starting point, drawn from how we sequence grounding work in our residential programs.
| Day | Morning (15 min) | Evening (15 min) | Daily anchor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Barefoot walk | Shavasana | Fixed sleep time |
| 2 | Tadasana and Vrikshasana | LAM chanting x21 | Three cooked meals |
| 3 | Standing sequence | Yoga Nidra | Clear one drawer |
| 4 | Malasana and Bridge | LAM chanting x54 | 30 min outdoors |
| 5 | Full standing practice | Yoga Nidra | Review your finances |
| 6 | Barefoot walk and Tadasana | Affirmations standing | Cook a root-vegetable meal |
| 7 | Free practice | Long Shavasana | Write down what changed |
Run it for four weeks before judging results.
If you would rather learn this properly than assemble it from videos, contact the Inteyoga team and tell us where you are in your practice.
What Foods Can Help Heal The Root Chakra?
Root chakra foods are grounding foods: vegetables grown underground, red whole foods, protein, and warm cooked meals. Food is the most direct exchange you have with the earth element.
| Category | Examples | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Root vegetables | Beetroot, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, parsnips | Grow in soil and absorb large quantities of nutrients from it |
| Red foods | Tomatoes, red peppers, pomegranate, strawberries, red apples | Match the root chakra colour and carry vitamin C, potassium and antioxidants |
| Protein | Lentils, chickpeas, black beans, almonds, pumpkin seeds | Substance and steady energy |
| Whole grains | Brown rice, oats, quinoa | Slow-release fuel, steadier mood |
| Spices | Ginger, garlic, turmeric, cloves, cayenne | Warming and circulation-supporting |
| Drinks | Ginger tea, hibiscus, rooibos, dandelion root | Warm, caffeine free, settling |
Reduce cold raw food eaten in a hurry, excess caffeine, sugar, alcohol and skipped meals. Erratic eating keeps the adrenals working overtime, which is the opposite of what a shaky root chakra needs.
How you eat counts as much as what you eat. Sit down, put the phone away, and eat slowly.
How Do I Know If My Root Chakra Is Activated?
An activated root chakra feels ordinary. You sleep better. You react less. Money stops running the day. You feel present in your own body.
Markers our students report: waking rested without fighting an alarm, deciding things without spiralling, noticing your feet on the floor when you stand, eating regularly without planning it, being comfortable alone at home, being able to save and commit, and steadier digestion.
If you are expecting heat, light or visions, adjust the expectation. Those are not reliable signs of a balanced Muladhara, and chasing them usually means the foundation is being skipped.

What Are The Benefits Of A Balanced Muladhara?
A balanced root chakra gives you a stable base, physically and practically. The benefits are ordinary, which is what makes them useful.
Background anxiety drops as the nervous system stops running on alarm. Sleep improves, both falling asleep and staying asleep. Energy steadies, with less crashing and less dependence on caffeine.
Posture and leg strength improve and lower-back complaints ease. Decisions get clearer because fewer of them are driven by fear. Money behaviour evens out, neither hoarding nor avoiding. Relationships get easier, because trusting others is difficult when you do not feel safe inside yourself.
There is also a practical reason we care about this at Inteyoga. Higher practices are only sustainable when Muladhara is steady, which is why Chakra Sadhana comes after months of asana and pranayama in our training, never before.
Root Chakra Vs Sacral Chakra: What Is The Difference?
These two get mixed up constantly, because they sit close together and share some symptoms.
The root chakra is about survival. The sacral chakra is about pleasure and flow. One asks whether you are safe. The other asks whether you are alive and enjoying it.
| Root chakra (Muladhara) | Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana) | |
|---|---|---|
| Position | First, base of spine | Second, below the navel |
| Element | Earth | Water |
| Colour | Red | Orange |
| Seed mantra | LAM | VAM |
| Core theme | Safety, survival, belonging | Pleasure, creativity, emotion |
| Core question | Am I safe? | Am I alive and flowing? |
| Blocked signs | Fear, fatigue, money anxiety, lower-back pain | Numbness, creative block, low libido, rigidity |
| Body areas | Legs, feet, bones, large intestine | Hips, pelvis, reproductive organs, kidneys |
| Healing style | Grounding, weight, structure | Movement, fluidity, release |
| Best practices | Standing poses, barefoot walking | Hip openers, flowing sequences |
If both feel off, work the root first. Creativity does not return while the body still believes it is under threat.
Who Should Avoid Intense Chakra Practice?
Gentle grounding such as walking, standing poses and simple mantra suits most healthy adults. Intensive chakra and kundalini practice does not.
Talk to a doctor first if you are pregnant or postpartum, or if you have high or low blood pressure, a heart condition, a hernia, recent abdominal or pelvic surgery, glaucoma or retinal problems, epilepsy, a current psychiatric diagnosis or history of psychosis or dissociation, or an acute injury to the spine, hips, knees or pelvic floor.
Stop and get guidance if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, panic, disturbed sleep, or a sense of losing touch with reality during practice. Those signal that you should slow down.
Advanced kriya and chakra practices move energy quickly, which is why we teach them only in a residential setting, under supervision, for students in good physical and mental health. Our programs are not designed as holiday retreats.
Where To Start
The root chakra gets the least attention of the seven and carries the most weight. Safety, sleep, food, routine, ground under your feet. Get those right and everything above them has somewhere to stand.
Walk barefoot tomorrow. Eat one warm meal sitting down. Chant LAM for five minutes. Take the self-check and repeat it in thirty days.
If you want to go further with it, Chakra Sadhana at Inteyoga is not a weekend workshop. It is taught as a supervised module inside our Advanced TTC 300-Hour Integrated Restorative Yoga in Sernabatim, Colva, South Goa, alongside Yoga Nidra and Prana Vidya.

Frequently Asked Questions
What colour is the root chakra?
The root chakra is red. In classical iconography it appears as a red four-petalled lotus with a yellow square at its centre representing the earth element. Red carries associations with vitality, blood and life force. Many practitioners wear red, use red visualisation in meditation, or eat naturally red foods as a simple support for Muladhara.
What is the root chakra mantra and how do I chant it?
The seed mantra is LAM (लं). Sit upright, bring attention to the base of the spine, and chant LAM aloud on a slow exhale. Aim to feel the vibration low in the pelvis rather than in the throat. Twenty-one repetitions is a reasonable start, and 108 is the traditional count.
How long does it take to heal the root chakra?
Most people notice small shifts, such as better sleep and less background anxiety, within two to four weeks of daily practice. Deeper change usually takes three to six months, particularly where older trauma is involved. Practising fifteen minutes daily produces more than two hours once a week.
Can you open the root chakra too fast?
Yes. Forcing intense pelvic-floor practice, breath retention or kundalini techniques without preparation can produce anxiety, disturbed sleep, agitation and a sense of being ungrounded. Traditional training sequences these practices slowly for that reason. Build asana and pranayama first, then add chakra work with a qualified teacher.
Which yoga poses are best for the root chakra?
Standing, weight-bearing poses work best. Tadasana, Vrikshasana, Utkatasana, Virabhadrasana II, Malasana and Setu Bandhasana, finishing in Shavasana. Hold each pose longer than usual and keep attention on the contact between your feet and the floor. Grounding is the aim, not flexibility.
Do root chakra crystals work?
No scientific evidence supports crystals affecting energy centres. What they can do is act as a physical reminder to practise, much like a wristband or an alarm. If red jasper or black tourmaline gets you to sit down for fifteen minutes of grounding, the benefit is real, though it comes from the practice.
Is root chakra work safe during pregnancy?
Gentle grounding such as walking, seated breathing and simple standing poses is usually fine. Avoid pelvic-floor practices like Moola Bandha and Ashwini Mudra, strong breath retention, and intensive kundalini techniques. Consult your doctor and work only with a teacher trained in prenatal yoga.
Can a blocked root chakra affect money and work?
Within this framework, yes. Muladhara governs survival, so imbalance often shows as money avoidance, panic saving, hoarding, or difficulty committing to work and plans. Grounding practice will not change your income, but it reliably lowers the fear behind poor financial decisions.
